A handful of people showed up for the grand opening of Canada’s first legal magic mushrooms dispensary, Fun Guyz, on Friday in downtown Kitchener. The chain, which opened in 2022 and now has 15 locations, is part of a movement to get access to “micro-doses” of psilocybin, the hallucinogenic compound found in magic mushrooms. The storefront is easy to spot, painted in bright colors and welcoming passersby with a rainbow fungus on the outside of the building. It’s the latest sign of a growing movement that’s taking advantage of changes to federal marijuana laws and looser regulations on medicinal plants.

While the new dispensary sells a wide range of cannabis products, including CBD edibles and tinctures, it specializes in mushroom supplements, allowing customers to take their medicine orally rather than through smoking. The company also offers a range of “micro-dose” psilocybin products, which it says are a good alternative to recreational drugs like cocaine and heroin.

Chillum’s owner, Carlos Hermida, is a familiar face in Florida political circles, having fought to make medical marijuana legal in the state. He’s now dipping his toes into the world of psychedelics, launching the psychedelic mushroom dispensary in an effort to push law enforcement and government boundaries. He refers to his fungi by their scientific name, Amanita muscaria, but he sells them as “magic” mushrooms. He’s prepared for a crackdown, but he hopes to grow his business by expanding his product line.
