Montreal Mushrooms Aren’t Playing Nice
Montreal is a city of culture, fine arts and urban sophistication, but it’s also at the forefront of a psychedelic resurgence. In addition to hosting multiple clinics and dispensaries, the city offers a variety of online shops that sell mushroom products for both recreational and therapeutic use.

For a while now, dispensaries with names like Fun Guyz, Shroom City and House of Mush have been popping up in the country’s biggest cities, welcoming customers with paintings of rainbow shiitakes on their storefronts and inviting passersby to “walk into a new reality.” But these dispensaries aren’t playing nice.

On Thursday, Montreal police (SPVM) knocked on the door of a Fun Guyz location in the Ville-Marie borough and conducted the store’s third search since it opened less than a month ago. A 24-year-old man was arrested and faces an upcoming court date, SPVM Const. Julien Levesque says. The service also searched a residence in Place Charles-Le Moyne in Longueuil and seized more narcotics.
The shop’s owner, who goes by the pseudonym Edgars, says he’s engaged in civil disobedience similar to what cannabis stores did before legalization. He says there’s a growing body of scientific research showing the potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin, the active ingredient in these hallucinogenic mushrooms. He adds that his products aren’t for recreational use, but rather a kind of medicine.
